As a teenager, Aiyan, no longer able to endure the constant conflicts and suffocating atmosphere of village life, leaves for Yakutsk to study and begin a new life. His brother, Tuluur, stays behind to care for their ailing mother. For the next nine years, Aiyan cuts all ties with his family, shutting himself off from the past. But when news of his mother's death reaches him, he is forced to return to his native village to settle her estate.
