Nestled deep in the Caucasus Mountains lies the remote astronomical settlement of Nizhny Arkhyz. Sergey, a historian from Novosibirsk, arrives at the invitation of Natasha, the wife of his childhood friend, who is planning a birthday surprise for her husband. While the children rehearse a festive song and Natasha takes Sergey on a tour of the giant telescope, a phone call arrives from Moscow. Delayed at a conference, the birthday man announces that he is not coming back—he has fallen in love with another woman. Natasha's world falls apart. She must now tell the truth to her children and guests while confronting the unexpected feelings that resurface for her longtime friend.
