At the age of twenty, Mariam fled Iran by wrapping herself in a sheepskin and hiding among a flock crossing the mountain border into Türkiye. The revolution had just triumphed, and her friends involved in political activism were being imprisoned or executed. Determined to save her, Mariam's family helped her escape. She left Iran—and has never returned.

With the help of friends back home, Mariam installs surveillance cameras in the house where her parents still live. The live images become a fragile lifeline to the past, projected onto a screen in her home in the United States. But whenever the internet is cut off in Iran, the images freeze or disappear, severing her connection to the place she once called home.
