A Russian man is sent from Moscow to take over as director of a music school in a Yakut town. Determined to impose his own order, he soon finds himself in conflict with Marta Grigoryevna, the director of the children’s choir. As perestroika takes hold, the Sakha people are forced to reclaim their sense of identity. The clash between two cultures leads to a mystical rapprochement between the director and his former rival. Marta must now choose between the sacredness of a dark past and a love that offers hope for a brighter future.
